One Killed In Explosion At Ashura Celebration In Iran

TEXT SIZE - +
One person was killed and several people were injured, some critically, in an explosion during an outdoor Ashura ceremony in northeastern Iran, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.

The explosion took place on January 7 in Torbat-e Jam, a town about 40 kilometers from the Iranian-Afghan border.

Iran's Mehr news agency reports that a "foreign mercenary" threw an explosive among mourners and then fled the scene.

Ashura, which marks the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is the most important day in the Shi'ite calendar.
