YEREVAN – The opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) will hold a rally in Yerevan on July 2, despite a three-month moratorium on protests that was recently announced by the party’s leader, former President Levon Ter-Petrosian, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reports.

HAK activist Levon Zurabian told RFE/RL that the party will hold the rally to celebrate the release under amnesty of oppositionists who were jailed for protesting the country’s February 2008 presidential election.

Although Ter-Petrosian said on June 12 that the party will not hold any rallies until September, Zurabian said the release of “the best organizers of the movement” would mean the party will continue its activity with “renewed vigor.”

He did not say whether the July 2 rally would be followed by other public demonstrations.
