MOSCOW -- Russia's opposition Other Russia coalition says it will hold a "Meeting of Dissent" in Moscow even if it does not receive official permission, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Aleksandr Averin, an Other Russia committee member, said that the Moscow mayor's office has officially refused to allow the meeting on Moscow's Triumphant Square, saying that a public sports event will be held there.

Averin said the mayor's office did not suggest alternate places for the movement's meeting.

Averin said the meeting will definitely be held on July 31, adding that the main demand of the demonstrators will be their right to gather publicly.

Similar public gatherings are planned for the end of August, October, and December.

Russian opposition parties have in recent years held protests in many cities that they call a March of Dissent, which are often broken up by security forces.
