Orthodox Bishop Stabbed In Belarus

MAHILEU, Belarus -- A man attacked and stabbed Bishop Safron in an Orthodox Church in the eastern Belarusian city of Mahileu on August 23, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The wounded priest had emergency surgery and is still hospitalized in stable condition.

Parishioners caught the man who attacked Safron.

The 36-year-old assailant is officially registered at a local psychiatric clinic.

Mahileu Oblast Interior Affairs Department spokesman Raman Posahau said police are investigating.

Doctors say Safron could be released from the hospital soon.
