Ousted Kyrgyz President Marks 65th Birthday In Exile

Askar Akaev

November 11, 2009
MOSCOW -- Former Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev celebrated his 65th birthday on November 10 in self-imposed exile in Moscow, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Akaev, who teaches mathematics at Moscow State University, ruled Kyrgyzstan for almost 15 years beginning in October 1990 when he became the country's first president.

In March 2005, he fled the country after nationwide mass protests against his rule in what is called the Tulip Revolution.

He and his family members -- who have been accused of massive corruption -- have been living in the Russian capital since then.
