Pakistani General Says Country Is Terrorist Safe Haven

TEXT SIZE - +
KHOST PROVINCE, Afghanistan -- An Afghan police commander says Pakistani General Hedayat Urrahman admitted at a meeting on the Pakistani-Afghan border that terrorists occupy safe havens in Pakistan.

Southeast Afghanistan Police Commander Nabijan Mullakhel told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that at an Afghan, Pakistani, and coalition forces military commission meeting on the Afghan-Pakistani border, Urrahman admitted that terrorists are using Pakistani territory as a center for operations.

Mullakhel spoke in Khost Province, where the meeting was held.

He said that since Pakistan has endured suicide attacks and other insurgent violence, Pakistani officials are starting to admit that terrorists are using Pakistan for crossborder attacks and returning to Pakistan.

The three sides discussed ways to curb such attacks by insurgent groups and how to jointly fight terrorism more effectively.
