JAFARABAD, Pakistan -- Four men were sentenced to life in prison today by a court in the western Pakistani province of Baluchistan for burying five women alive, RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal reports.

Another defendant involved in the case was sentenced to six months in prison, while 16 defendants were acquitted of the so-called "honor killings."

The women's murders in Baluchistan's Jafarabad district in August 2008 gained international attention.

International and Pakistani human right activists held numerous protests demanding justice for the victims.

"Honor killings" of Pakistani women occur fairly regularly, but not all the cases are reported by the media.
