LVIV, Ukraine -- The Ukrainian Nationalist Party in western Ukraine has started collecting signatures for a petition to have the remains of Stepan Bandera transferred from Germany to Ukraine, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

The party intends to send the petition to the president, prime minister, and parliament.

Bandera was one of the leaders of Ukrainian national movement in the western Galicia region. He headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), which played a crucial role in the history of Ukraine during World War II.

Bandera was assassinated by the Soviet KGB in Munich, Germany, on October 15, 1959, and buried in the Waldfriedhof Cemetery.

The Ukrainian Nationalist Party wants his remains to be reburied in Lykachivskiy Cemetery in Lviv.
