MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Masked men have shot dead a senior police officer in the Russian region of Daghestan, Russian news agencies reported.

The head of the mainly Muslim region's special operations unit, Lieutenant Colonel Shapi Aligadzhiyev, died after two men shot him with pistols today outside his apartment, ITAR-TASS news agency reported, quoting a police official.

Mounting turbulence in the North Caucasus has become a major headache for the Kremlin, sparking fears that the violence could spill over into other parts of Russia.
