Price Hikes In Russia's Kirov Lead To Protests

KIROV -- More than 100 opposition activists protested price increases for utilities, medicine, and transportation fees in the northeastern Russian city of Kirov today, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

More than 100 demonstrators, many of them from the Communist Party, gathered in front of the main government administration building in downtown Kirov.

Protest organizers told RFE/RL they expected more than 1,000 to attend the demonstration but that attendance was lower because of the extremely cold weather, with temperatures reaching minus 25 degrees Celsius.

The demonstrators demanded the Russian government stop raising the prices for utilities, lower the costs for fuel and basic goods, and to cancel the decision to double some transportation fees.
