SHAKHTINSK, Kazakhstan -- Well-known Kazakh boxer Yermek Serikov has died after being shot, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Serikov, 20, was brought to a hospital in the central Kazakh city of Shakhtinsk with a gunshot wound to his leg late on August 11. He died during surgery.

Investigators have said that an unnamed assailant shot Serikov near a gas station. A car with a bullet casing inside was found at the scene of the shooting.

Serikov was a three-time Asian boxing champion as a welterweight.

Several prominent athletes have either been shot or have died in suspicious circumstances in Kazakhstan in recent years.
