High-Ranking Daghestani Investigator Shot Dead

MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- The deputy chief of the Russian Prosecutor-General's Investigations Committee has been shot dead by unknown assailants in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Daghestan's Interior Ministry said Seyfudin Kaziakhmedov was investigating several high-profile cases of illegal armed organizations in the republic.

He said he had previously received several threats from extremist groups.

Daghestan is one of the most volatile republics in Russia's North Caucasus, with dozens of officials and insurgents being killed and kidnapped this year.
