KIROVSKY -- More than 200 citizens in a Russian city in the country's Far East have demonstrated against what they call "lawlessness" by police in the region, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Protesters gathered on June 13 in the main stadium of Kirovsky to commemorate two people killed by police in the nearby city of Ussuriisk last week. The deaths came during a special police operation against an armed group wanted for a series of attacks on police in recent weeks.
Two members of the group died in the June 11 shoot-out with police. Four others were captured. The six reportedly are between 18 and 22 years old.
The demonstrators demanded local police authorities be held accountable for the incident, which they said was provoked by police. They also called for a thorough and transparent investigation.
The protesters then marched across the town and threw flowers into the local river. The demonstration was unsanctioned, but police did not interfere in the
action.
