MINSK -- Belarusian Helsinki Committee volunteers held an anti-racism rally in Minsk, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The activists distributed different-colored balloons to people, reminding them about the equality of all races.

Protest coordinator Valerya Savchankava, a student at Belarusian State University's philology department, said that in recent years such phenomena as racism and xenophobia have become a real problem in Belarus. She expressed the hope that actions similar to hers would help improve the situation.

Savchankava said the action was held in conjunction with the United Nations' week against racism and xenophobia.
