MOSCOW -- The main coordinator of the rescue operations at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station has been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Daniyar Safiulin, the head of the Siberian Regional Center for Emergency Situations, was transferred to Moscow for treatment. Doctors say his condition is very serious.

Safiulin had coordinated the rescue works at the power station, where one of the turbine rooms flooded on August 17. At least 60 people are still missing from the accident, which killed 17.

Rescue workers are pumping out water in order to get access to compartments that have been underwater since the accident.

More than 2,000 people are involved in the clean-up effort.
