TEXT SIZE - +
MINSK -- Russia will help Belarus construct a new nuclear power plant, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Speaking to parliament today, Deputy Prime Minister Uladzimer Syamashka said Belarus has selected a project for the construction of the new nuclear plant prepared by specialists from St. Petersburg.

Syamashka said Russia is ready to provide Belarus with a $9 billion loan for the project.

The loan covers the period from 2010 to 2018.

An agreement on the project is expected to be signed in September.

Activists and oppositionists in Belarus have been protesting the planned new nuclear power plant for several years.
