Russian-Belarusian Electricity Transit Talks Due To Resume


MINSK -- The third round of Russian-Belarusian talks on Russian electricity transit to the Baltic states and the Russian region of Kaliningrad is scheduled for January 19, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Officials of the Russian electricity monopoly, Unified Energy Systems (Inter RAO EES), told RFE/RL that on January 4, Belarus's state power company, Belenerga, warned Russian officials that electricity transfers to Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast via Belarus might be suspended due to "inappropriate fees."

According to Unified Energy Systems, Belarus wants a more than five-fold increase in electricity transit fees.

No exact figures were given. No official information was provided regarding the results of the two previous talks on the issue held on January 12 and 14.
