Antifascist Youth Leader Shot Dead In Moscow

TEXT SIZE - +
Ivan Khutorsky, the leader of the Russian antifascist movement Antifa, has been shot dead in Moscow, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Anatoly Bagmet, head of the Prosecutor-General's Office's Investigative Committee, said Khutorsky's body was found late on November 16 at the entrance to his home.

He said the committee is exploring several possible motives for the murder, including Khutorsky's antifascist activities.

Khutorsky, 26, had received many death threats from ultranationalists and radical groups and was physically attacked twice in 2005.

Aleksei Grigoryev, an Antifa activist, told RFE/RL that Khutorsky's murder proves that "it is still dangerous to express antifascist opinion in Russia."

Grigoryev said Khutorsky is the 10th antifascist activist to have been killed in Russia in recent years.

Once again, we see how racist and xenophobic a large chunk of the Russian population is. This proves that Russia will not become a world leader with good credibility in the eyes of the international community until their leaders address the populous movement of hatred and brutality towards non-slavic people. However, as the slavic russian's death toll rises and their birthrate decreases, things may change as the ethnic minorities in that country increase in population and power over the next 20-40 years.
