MOSCOW -- Russian environmental activists say they will continue their fight to preserve the Khimki forest near Moscow if authorities decide to go ahead with the construction of a new Moscow-St. Petersburg highway, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Yevgenia Chirikova, who heads the Save Khimki Forest group, said today her organization will ask the Transportation Ministry to provide documents on the new highway so they can assess its environmental impact.

On October 12, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev discussed the planned highway with a group of experts behind closed doors.

In August, Medvedev ordered the suspension of construction work after numerous protests by Save Khimki Forest and other activists.

On October 11, Chirikova said that despite Medvedev's order, some construction activity continues at the site where trees are being felled to make way for the highway.
