YEREVAN -- Russian Orthodox Church leader Patriarch Kirill has honored the victims of what Armenians consider the first genocide of the 20th century.

During a visit to Yerevan, Kirill laid wreaths at Yerevan's Armenian Genocide Monument, dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Armenians who died in World War I-era mass killings by Turkish forces.

Russia is among the countries that recognize the killings as genocide, a term Turkey rejects.

Earlier, Kirill pledged to strengthen relations between the Russian and Armenian churches at the beginning of his three-day official visit.

Kirill and Catholicos Garegin II, the supreme leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church, were greeted by hundreds of believers and led a joint prayer service at the Armenian church's main cathedral in Echmiadzin, near Yerevan, shortly after Kirill's arrival in the Armenian capital on March 16.

"Every visitor to Armenia receives unforgettable impressions, looking at its main symbol, the holy Mount Ararat," Kirill said in a speech.

He added that Russian-Armenian relations have been "warm and friendly" ever since modern-day Armenia was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1828 as a result of a Russo-Persian war. He underlined the significance of that victory later in the day by visiting a memorial to Russian soldiers killed in that war.

Garegin, for his part, spoke of the Armenian people's "total love of and warm feelings of gratitude toward the Russian [Orthodox] Church, the great Russian people, and the Russian state."

A spokesman for Garegin, Vahram Melikian, told RFE/RL's Armenian Service that the visit will "further strengthen" ties between the two churches, which both enjoy strong government support.

Russian analysts say that unlike his predecessor, Aleksy II, who died in 2008, Kirill is active in the political arena and keen to reach out to other churches. Aleksei Makarkin, director of the Moscow-based Center for Political Technologies, likened him to experienced politicians who can "very quickly achieve their goals."

Makarkin told RFE/RL that the 63-year-old patriarch has a cordial rapport with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

"Patriarch Kirill is undoubtedly an influential political figure in Russia, someone whose views the Kremlin takes into account," he said.

The Armenian Apostolic Church is the oldest state church in the world.

why isa Rferl writting still`Armenia 'Genocide'
Armenina Genocide is fact!

Genocide without simultaneous denial is unthinkable — yes, even impossible. The first thing that must be done is to consider what the perpetrators want to attain through denial. Denial is not just the simple negation of an act; it is much more the consequent continuation of the very act itself. Genocide should not only physically destroy a community; it should likewise dictate the prerogative of interpretation in regard to history, culture, territory and memory. As if Armenian nation never existed!

To Eddy

Because for the "cold war" mentality staff of RFERL, geo-political gains and international power and trade comes before the truth.

That is why the Holocaust, the Cambodian, Rwandan, Darfurian genocides are Genocides. But when it comes to Turkey, its Nato status, the oil transit routes, support to Israel by a muslim nation, and other revealed and hidden international interests.. the Armenian Genocide is 'Genocide'.

Since when did the West honor and champion human rights and truth?

Well said Armenian,

Armenian Genocide is the first of the 20th centuary. it is not a guess, ITS A FACT!
as far as US is concerned, they will never accept it due to military ties with Turkey for the war in IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, PAKISTAN, ext. US seems to be everywhere. Now heres a second thought, if US and turkey are such close allies how come turkey didnt let US invade IRAQ through its own borders???? when BUSH called turkey to ask them permission to enter, turkey said NO. so how dose the Obama Administration say that they have Air bases in turkey, and are close allies? i dont get it, are they dumbbb or stupid. Obama is a lier for promising the recognition of the Armenian Genocide before he was president, but now his helping turkey not to pass the resolution?? i mean Armenian community got to thank the Jews on this one, they are now turning away from turkey and are trying to teach turkey a lesson. The best US president on this issue and for US has been Ronald Regan, even being a republican he still used the word genocide to describe the killings of Armenians by ottoman turks. also Elenor Roosevelt was the first "first lady" to actually make a commity to find out the truth about the killings and they did. So, stop denying all the facts. turkey is desperate for allies because no one seems to take their side, not even their muslim counterparts. turkey is dying to join EU and guess why they wont let them? he is only a NATO member. People please read up on your history so you can know the truth and one day hope that you wont repeat the same mistakes.

It is shame for RFE/RL to continue to use brackets to qualify the Armenian Genocide.

While you are at it why not use 'Slave Route' or 'Holocaust.'? This is a disgrace

Hey, is this a Radio "Liberty" or Turkey's state radio?
If you use word Genocide in brackets, you better change either radio name or site domain at least and put "tr" or "gov.tr" instead of "com".

The reason why the Armenian Genocide is always presented with quotation marks is because RFE/RL is a CIA run propaganda operation primarily interested with undermining Mother Russia. Simple as that.

The Armenian Genocide is a fact! RFERL should be ashamed of itself for placing the word in quotes! This is unbelievable.

The Russian Patriarch shows honor to the victims of the ARMENIAN GENOCIDE but the hidden writer of the story shows lack of respect to the 1,500,000 lives murdered by the Turks. Shame on Radio "Free" Europe and Radio "Liberty." Maybe Europe should be in quotes as well as neither the writer nor or his bosses are European. This so called "news service" owes an apology to all Armenians. Begin by exposing the writer and firing him!

It is a shame that the Patriarch was in the Caucasus and did not get a chance to stop by Sochi and honor the victims of the CIrcassian Genocide when Russia invaded CIrcassia and til today occupy the land of the Circassians...

Presumed "Holly Mount Ararat", Russian Patriarh Kirill?
{Is it more important that the real Holly Mountain of God?}
"Worm and friendly" Armenia, incorporasted by Russia will,
After victory over Persia in1828, in Russian colonial Empire?

Wrong, liberated by Georgia and Russia, it created, agreement
Turkish Armenia, parts of Georgia and Iranian Azerbaijan, later bent
By betraying them evil Russia - even Georgia was the main liberator.
Kirill's Kirillitca and Mefoditca? Or another imperial resurection?

Is "undermining Mother Russia" - puting genocide in quotes?
"Experienced politician that very quikly acheive their goals",
Russia sais Kirill's "views Kremlin takes into account".
Easy understand - Russia pushing through Mounts!

Lying and deceiving Russia expanding - next Turks.
Already occupying Northern Caucasus and Georgia
In parts, breeding ethnic Russians and their Armies,
Russia only need classify Turks as outlaw and atack.

Konstantin.
