Police in Moscow have arrested a leading Kremlin opponent and several other activists at a demonstration demanding freedom of assembly.

Several hundred protesters gathered in a Moscow square for a rally city authorities tried to ban. The Associated Press reports Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov was detained along with several other protesters.

The exact number of those detained was not clear. Moscow authorities rarely give permission for the rallies.
