BARNAUL, Russia -- A memorial service for a South Korean student was held on February 22 in the central Russian city of Barnaul, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Kang Byonggilom, 22, died of stab wounds in a hospital on February 18 after he was attacked by a group of youths in the city center.

Kang, an exchange student from the Gwangju National University of Education, was enrolled at the Altai State Pedagogical Academy. He will be buried in South
Korea.

Olga Chesnokova, an assistant to the head of the Altai Krai Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor-General's Office, told RFE/RL that five suspects, including two minors, have been arrested in connection with the killing.

South Korea's consul-general in Russia flew to Barnaul after the killing, which he described as a serious blow to relations between the two universities. But he said the exchange program between Altai Krai and South Korea will continue despite the incident.
