ROSTOV-NA-DONU -- Police in the Russian city of Rostov-na-Donu detained a woman who allegedly tried to sell her daughter, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

A spokesman for the regional Interior Affairs Department in Rostov said the suspect, who reportedly has a criminal record, was detained after she received 4 million rubles (about $107,000) from an undercover policeman in payment for her 6-year-old daughter.

The child was immediately transferred to a local child-care center.

Her mother could face 12 years in jail if found guilty of selling the child.
