Russian Workers Find WW II-Era Mass Grave

TEXT SIZE - +
PSKOV, Russia -- Construction workers in the northwestern Russian city of Pskov have unearthed a World War II-era mass grave, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The regional prosecutor's office say workers discovered human bones while preparing to lay telecommunications cable in the foundation of a Pskov apartment building.

A prosecutor's office spokesperson says that during World War II, referred to as the Great Patriotic War by Russians, the site was used as a work camp. Pskov was occupied by German troops from 1941-44.

The bones that were found were sent to a laboratory for examination, after which bodies will be reinterred. Officials said they expect more remains will be found in the coming days.

Pskov, which has a population of about 200,000 people, is near Russia's border with Estonia and Latvia.
