Russians Protest Delay In Providing Heating

SARATOV, Russia -- Hundreds of protesters have gathered in the Russian city of Saratov to demand heating in their apartments, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The demonstration was organized by the regional branch of the opposition Yabloko party.

The protesters accused the local authorities and the ruling United Russia party of failing to provide heating on schedule.

Saratov Yabloko branch Chairman Dmitry Konnychev said that the protest was directed against the local government and the ruling United Russia party because they are responsible for the lack of heating in the city.

The Saratov authorities promised heating would be provided beginning on October 6. But heating was not turned on until today -- and not in all city neighborhoods.
