Separatist Party Wins Most Seats In Belgium Election

A separatist party that supports independence for the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium has won the largest share of seats in Belgium's parliamentary elections.

Final results of the June 13 vote said the New Flemish Alliance won 27 of 150 legislative seats.

It is the first time that a party that advocates the dissolution of Belgium has won the most votes in a national election.

The party says it supports dividing Belgium between Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and southern French-speaking Wallonia -- but if it wants to rule following this latest vote, the party will need to form a coalition with Wallonian parties.

The Socialists won the most votes in Wallonia, taking 26 seats, and could also be in a position to form a government.

Reports say talks to form a new coalition are expected to take weeks.
