MOSCOW -- Seven Tajik migrant workers have died in a fire at an underground parking garage in the Russian capital.

A representative for the Tajik Embassy in Moscow, Salim Khatloni, told RFE/RL's Tajik Service that they were all Tajik citizens who worked and lived in the garage, which included small living quarters for them.

The reason for the fire is unclear.

Khatloni said Tajik officials are at the scene and taking part in the investigation.

Officials say the main reason for fires starting in Russia is the use of unlicensed heating equipment.

There are hundreds of thousands of Tajik workers in Russia.

Dozens of Tajiks died in construction accidents in 2008, and 12 died in a Moscow fire last winter.
