KIRKUK, Iraq -- Six candidates have been confirmed for the Kurdish regional government's presidential election to be held on July 25, RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq reports.

Hamdiya al-Husseini, the region's chief electoral officer, said that registration ended on May 25.

Incumbent President Masud Barzani is seeking a second four-year term and is the favorite in the election.

Husseini pointed out that updating the electoral register has been delayed as no budget for the election has been approved. She said the election commission had to apply for an urgent loan, which came on May 25 from the regional government.

Barzani declared on May 5 that the region's parliamentary and presidential elections will both be held on July 25.

Some 25 parties and coalitions are contesting the regional parliament's 111 seats.
