NAZRAN -- An official was assassinated in Russia's volatile southern Republic of Ingushetia, while five people were killed in a shoot-out, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Court bailiff Timur Ugurchiev was shot to death while driving his car to work.

Meanwhile, near the town of Muzhichi close to neighboring Chechnya, an officer of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) was killed in a clash between federal troops and a group of 12 gunmen.

According to Ingushetia's law enforcement officials, four rebels were also killed in the shoot-out.

The deaths bring to 26 the number of suspected insurgents killed in operations along the border with Chechnya since May 16, Interfax reported, citing the Interior Ministry.
