Six Suspected Of Planning Bombings Arrested In Kabul

July 14, 2009
KABUL -- Afghan security officials have arrested six people in Kabul who they say were planning to launch terrorist attacks in key regions of the capital, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.

Afghan National Security Directorate spokesman Sayed Ansari said in Kabul on July 13 that the group was involved in a series of suicide bombings at some governmental institutions last year, including the Justice Ministry and the Information and Culture Ministry.

Some 50 people, including an Afghan parliament deputy, were killed during the attacks.

Ansari said the group "planned to launch another series of five suicide attacks on some other governmental institutions in Kabul."

Reports say those arrested were linked to Afghan insurgent leader Sirajuddin Haqqani and have close ties with the Pakistani Taliban.
