Six U.S. soldiers have been killed in insurgent attacks in Afghanistan.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said that the troops died on August 29 and August 28 in various incidents in the volatile south and east of the country.

NATO had earlier said its forces killed at least 21 insurgents who had launched predawn attacks on two bases in eastern Afghanistan. And Afghan authorities announced that a candidate in the September parliamentary elections was on August 28 shot dead in the western Herat Province.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press reports that villagers have found the bodies of five kidnapped campaign workers for a parliamentary candidate in Herat.

District chief Nasar Ahmad Popul said residents of Herat's Adraskan district reported finding the bodies early on August 29.

The five were snatched by armed men who stopped their convoy on August 25.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killings, although Taliban insurgents have been waging a campaign of murder and intimidation in hopes of sabotaging the September 18 polls.
