BISHKEK -- Relatives of people killed in clashes between Kyrgyz security forces and antigovernment protesters in Bishkek last month say they will picket the Belarusian Embassy to call for former President Kurmanbek Bakiev to be extradited, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz and Belarus services report.
Nuria Aydabosunova, spokeswoman of the Bishkek-based nongovernmental organization Martyrs of the Land, told journalists today that the protesters' main demand is for Belarusian officials to send Bakiev to Kyrgyzstan to stand trial for his role in the clashes on April 7 that led to 86 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Bakiev fled Bishkek on April 7 and eventually went into exile in Belarus.
Kyrgyzstan's interim government has issued an arrest warrant for Bakiev and several of his relatives and close associates.
They are wanted for charges including abuse of power, embezzlement, and their roles in ordering security forces to open fire on protesters during the uprising.
Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has stated he will not extradite Bakiev.
