St. Petersburg Ombudsman Fired For Political Activities

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg has removed the city's ombudsman, Igor Mikhailov, from his position, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

An assembly special commission reported that Mikhailov was involved in political activities, which is forbidden under the law on the ombudsman.

Nine employees of the ombudsman's apparatus ran in the regional elections in the Leningrad Oblast on October.

Mikhailov has not commented on his removal.
