KYIV -- Hundreds of university students have gathered in central Kyiv to demand the resignation of Education and Science Minister Dmitro Tabachnyk, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Tabachnyk was named to the post on March 11. One of his first decrees removed the Ukrainian-language examination from the list of tests required for bachelor degrees.

That move sparked protests in many of Ukraine's western regions and in the capital. Several demonstrations were held calling for his resignation on March 31. Some regional councils have also urged the government to dismiss Tabachnyk.

On March 30, opposition factions within the Ukrainian parliament demanded his dismissal, but his critics failed to win enough votes to oust him.

Tabachnyk, who is a member of the ruling Party of Regions, has said he does not plan to step down.
