A suicide bomber has killed the chief of Pakistan's Frontier Constabulary, the paramilitary police force of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, in a brazen attack in Peshawar.

Sifwat Ghayoor was killed along with two other police officers and at least 10 were wounded.

"Three people have been martyred, and the injured have been taken to the hospital," Bashir Bilour, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's senior minister, told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal.

"Sifwat Ghayoor, who was our top cop, has been martyred. His driver has also been martyred."

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing and threatened further targeted assassinations.

Ghayoor was a highly regarded commander of the Frontier Constabulary, which assists other security-force detachments in military operations against Pakistani Taliban militants in the volatile northwest.

Police officer Waris Khan said from the scene of the attack that at least two vehicles were in flames near the Frontier Constabulary headquarters after the explosion.

Witnesses described the attack as "a big explosion."
