ALMATY/BISHKEK -- Kazakh investigators have arrested two people in connection with the murder of Kyrgyz journalist Gennady Pavlyuk, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Kazakh Interior Ministry spokesman Quanyshbek Zhumanov announced on October 6 that the two were apprehended in Almaty last week. The Kazakh authorities have been cooperating with Kyrgyz police since December in an investigation into Pavlyuk's death.

Pavlyuk, 51, was thrown from a building in Almaty on December 16 with his arms and legs bound. He died in a hospital six days later.

Before travelling to Almaty, Pavlyuk had met with Omurbek Tekebaev, then a Kyrgyz opposition politician, and discussed possible cooperation with Tekebaev's Ata-Meken (Fatherland) party.

Pavlyuk was known in Kyrgyzstan under the pseudonym Rustam Ibragimbek. He founded the "White Steamer" newspaper and website. He also wrote for the newspaper "Vecherny Bishkek" (Evening Bishkek) and the Russian weekly "Argumenty i fakty."

RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports that a monument to Pavlyuk is due to be unveiled in Bishkek on October 8.
