DUSHANBE -- Tajikistan has handed a note to Russia's official representative in Dushanbe expressing concern about Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's comments on the construction of hydropower stations in the region.

During a visit to Uzbekistan last week, Medvedev said that all plans on the construction of new hydropower stations should be approved by all the Central Asian countries.

On January 26, Tajik Foreign Ministry spokesman Davlat Nazri told RFE/RL's Tajik Service that the ministry's note says Medvedev's statement contradicts Tajik-Russian agreements, including one on Russia's involvement in the construction of the Roghun power station on the Vakhsh river.

Uzbekistan has long opposed the project, but Tajik officials are committed to building the 347-meter-tall dam despite Uzbek concerns.

Landlocked Uzbekistan relies on its neighbors for water supplies and for transit routes to export its energy resources, while Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are the region's two major water suppliers.

This is absolutely adequate decision by Tajik authorities. Russia is playing double-sided games. We will build Rogun and will become one of the main major water suppliers who will control Uzbek water distribution. May Allah help us!

We should always take into consideration our national interests. We must build our plans at any cost - in order to provide better future for the children of our nation.

i'm amazed by ignorance and lies of Russian leaders. I'm glad Russia is not going to be a part of Rogun's construction. We respect our neighboors right of choice on how to and to whome to export their gas/oil. same goes for us. simple as that

I think, building of this power station, is just an aspiration of Tadjik authority to influence regional politics. Everyone knows, that Uzbekistan has an impact on neighbourhood countries and there is a competition with Kazakhstan for regional dominance. What Medvedev did, is just an explanation of real-politique. So, if Russia is in favour of Uzbekistan at the moment, it means, that Uzbekistan is the leader in region.
