RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports that Taliban gunmen stormed a police station in northern Afghanistan on August 26, killing eight police and leaving a ninth police officer injured.

Konduz Province's Governor Mohammad Omar told RFE/RL that the injured police officer fought off the predawn assault -- preventing the attackers from seizing the building in the third district of the provincial capital, Konduz city.

In a telephone interview from an undisclosed location, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told RFE/RL that Taliban fighters carried out the attack.
