Three Opposition Activists Detained In Belarus

HOMEL, Belarus -- Police in the Belarusian town of Narovlya have detained three opposition activists, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Uladzimir Katsora, Andrey Tolchyn, and Alyaksandr Protska were detained on April 23 for distributing leaflets informing locals about a ceremony commemorating victims of Chornobyl nuclear accident planned by the leaders of opposition parties.

The town of Narovlya is situated along the Pripyat River and is well-known as one of the places affected by the nuclear accident in 1986.

Opposition leaders plan to commemorate the victims of Chornobyl by placing flowers to the Chornobyl Victims Memorial on April 25, the 23d anniversary of the tragedy.

Two of the activists were later released. Andrey Tolchyn remains in custody. He is charged with organizing an unsanctioned public event.
