Two Moldovans Detained In Ukraine For ‘Coup Attempt’

ODESA -- Ukrainian police and customs officers have detained two Moldovan citizens at the airport in Odesa, RFE/RL's Ukrainian service reports.

Officials of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office told journalists that Moldovan authorities had requested the detention of Gabriel Stati and Aurel Marinescu for their alleged "involvement in organizing an attempt to overthrow the Moldovan government."

RFE/RL's correspondent in Odesa reports that the Ukrainian prosecutor general is studying the Moldovan officials' request to extradite the two detainees to Moldova.

Moldovan opposition and their supporters have been protesting the results of the parliamentary elections held last on April 5, accusing the Moldovan government of fraud.

Mass actions of protest in the Moldovan capital Chisinau this week led to violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers.
