KYIV -- A hunger-striking member of the opposition Fatherland (Batkivshchyna) party headed by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been hospitalized in Kyiv after a deterioration in her health, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Tamara Bihun is one of seven Tymoshenko supporters who began a hunger strike in front of the Central Election Commission building in Kyiv on October 5.
Further details on her condition were not available.
The protesters are demanding the registration of what they say is a legitimate electoral list from their party for local elections scheduled for October 31. They also demand that the elections be conducted fairly.
Meanwhile, city authorities have organized an outdoor fair next to the venue where the hunger strike is taking place at which, at one point, free pancakes were being given to passersby.
Opposition activists say such acts are cynical and claim the authorities are trying to hide the protest from the public.
Tymoshenko asked her supporters on October 12 to end their hunger strike.
