Ukrainian Police Arrested For Alleged Torture

ODESA, Ukraine -- Five police officers in Ukraine's southern Odesa Oblast have been arrested for allegedly torturing detainees, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

The regional prosecutor's press service said today that the policemen were from the oblast's Rozdilnya District and that they allegedly tortured detainees in an effort to obtain information.

Numerous signs of torture were reportedly documented on the bodies of several detainees.

It was not reported how many people were said to have been tortured or why they were detained. The prosecutor said the police used electric shocks while interrogating them.

One of the victims also said the policemen put a plastic bag over his head while he was being questioned.
