Video Interview: Vaclav Havel On Global Crisis, NATO's Limits, And Democracy Promotion

TEXT SIZE - +
Soviet-era dissident, noted humanist, and former Czech President Vaclav Havel visited RFE/RL's new broadcasting headquarters in Prague on March 27. Havel, who played a key role in bringing RFE/RL to the Czech Republic in 1995, sat down for an interview with senior correspondent Jeremy Bransten.

Havel talked about drawing the right lessons from the current "civilizational crisis," Europe's natural borders, and the challenge of helping those in need while avoiding "a new form of colonialism." (Transcript here)

Your journalist didn't ask many important questions. What will happen with the radar on Czech soil - Havel supported it, but now the government fell because of it.He should have asked questions about the moral responsibility in politics. Havel is a moralist. Very weak interview.

President Havel is an enormous statesman and brilliant political thinker. He represents European thinking which is obviously not the same as American thinking. However, I for one would like American politicians listen to President Havel and others with this philosophy. We could definitely move their direction and away from our own hubris.
