Video: Nagorno-Karabakh -- Dreams Of Youth

October 13, 2009
For an entire generation of young Armenians, Nagorno-Karabakh is the only home they've ever known. The region split from Azerbaijan in a brutal conflict following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Born in war and raised in an uneasy peace, this generation is reaching adulthood and could see their world change yet again. Momentum is building for a final settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan that could mean an end to Nagorno-Karabakh's isolation. It could also mean the return large numbers of Azerbaijanis displaced by the war.

RFE/RL's Brian Whitmore traveled to the enclave and spoke to young people about their views on the conflict and their hopes for the future.

I'd like to note that the current population of Nagorno-Karabakh is 138000. For them to live in an independent state which is still not recognized, 15000 died, 85000 got wounded, 1030000 got displaced (including 230000 Armenians from Azerbaijan). Was it worth it? War is rarely worth it. In a war both sides loose. Though admittedly, in this case Azerbaijan lost much more.
There's no going back. Let's just hope we don't repeat the same mistakes and don't provoke another war.

This report is misleading for a number of reasons. First there are not 'hundreds of thousands' of Azeris from Karabagh. Prior to the war Azeris constituted about 25% of the total population of Karabagh which at the time was less than 200,000 people. Perhaps the reporter is conflating the population of the surrounding territories which were overwhelmingly Azeri.

Secondly the solution is to allow Karabagh to join the Republic of Armenia. In exchange Armenians will return the area surrounding Karabagh except for Lachin (which connects Karabagh to Armenia).

Regretfully,TMAN -especially-and to a certain degree Mike, seem to read between lines of my"suggestions" as to a mutually beneficial compromise both to Armenians of NK and Azeris-displaced,plus Armenians as well. The rule mode will remian AS IS, that is NK Parliament as is army there as is , boundaries as is.With only difference that It will change its diplomatically named stance, i.e. instead of Independent(which anyhow is not as yet frecognized, not even by RA)...to "Principality of Nagornyi Karabagh" and declared as a FREE TRADE ZONE.Indeed, if you gentlemen do not know the Andorra´s infrastructure, please dip into it.It is nominally ruled by both FRANCE and SPAIN.However, majority population-like in NK- is Catalan(spanish). In the case of NK,same will suit it,since for centuries it was a bone of contention-as the Andorra case...
Armenians there will profit immensely-more than the Azeris, since they will remian as the majority. If you get hold of book "Karabagh" by Prof. George Bournutian, wherein he very miticulously describes how that Province has always been invaded ,ruled by seljuk, tatar, Dagestani, Persian and Russian invaders,Armenian Meliks(Khamsai Melikutyunner) this by the by very much suits the new Stance "suggested" Melik is an Arab word "Malak" ...prince..thence those Meliks only could make themselves rulers in higher mountainous part of it-as strongholds-while all rest was either ruled by Persian Khanagtes etc., by "suggesting " this mode of compromise I do not in anyway forget all that has transpired there...
But if you follow the internationlal give and take, you will please note that Turkey, rather great Turkey(made so by U.S especially and others...) will not budge, they are admant in their stance as to Armenians have to cede the "occupied" territories(indeed we do not dub this as they do,we say Liberated) and unless RA and Artsakh accept that they will be with their minor state, viz. Azerbaijan,I trust you understand that and this backed up supportged especailly by U.S, Russia and EU.We loose nothing ,since under strict visa entry rule, no azeris will be let in,(excepted in those tow districts-AS AGAINSGT OURS resettling in Shahumian, from where close to 40,000 Armenians were evicted by OMON azeri forces in war.
Main point is to appease great Turkey and allies-some allies_which you Anglo-Am Armenians ,above should have comprehended by now...
Russia is supposedly indifferent, sometimes siding with NK Armenians ,sometimes with mentioned (now dealing with them commercewise Oil wise gas wise) this is what really matters to Russia and the other two plus EU.They simply want the Region left in peace , so as they can carry on with pumping oil out, capiche?

The only solution to the conflict is respecting each others rights - Azerbaijan respecting the rights of Armenians living in Karabagh and Armenians respecting Azerbaijan's territorial integrity... Then peace and cooperation will come to the region...

NK conflict resolution can thus be arranged. Both above comments are respected. In order to attain a mutually agreeable stance-status ,I "suggest":-
Andorra on Pyrenees , was a bon of contention between France and Spain for 2 centuries-you read right-two hundred years and a war.
Finally they agreed on a joint rule-this actually more to the Catalans´´,Spain´s Cataluña Autonomous Province, next to it, favour.Largely populated by latter.Declaring it as "Principality of Andorra".Upto 41 yrs ago it had only 12 policemen(now over a hundred). Then they declared it as a FREE TRADE ZONE.President (nominally) of it is France´s, while premier or vice pres. the Archbishop of Seu Urgel, closest catalan city to it.Since then it has thrived economically and -as very low customs duties are levied on imports-Tourism has blossomed. Both partgies realize that the government there is mainly(Parliament et al) Catalan, rather than spanish or French.Main features explained, now more similarities herebelow of Andorra to NK(Nagorniyi Karabagh).Population-wise ?mainly Armenian.
1º.In order to appease both great Turkey and twin state(as they state it)Azerbaijan, above mode ought to be considered for rule there.
2.That is outwardly as "Principality of Nagornyi Karabagh",in Armenianlanguage as, "Gharabaghi Melikutyun",azeri version "Gharebagh Malakiat-i".
3.Refugees ONLY from Jabrail and Fizouli admitted to resettle back, from azeri side, while Armenians from Shahumian likewise to their cradles..
3/4 azeri delegates into the "NK Principality" ,thus by and by attaining peacefull co-existance.I have written about this in 1997 in Armenian weekly of L.A(Hay Gyank).Armenians will indeed be making a big concession in this fashion, while great Turkey quest for egional supremacy a bit quelled and probably agreeign to make similar concession to Armenia-as rgds Genocide Recognition, reparations some land return-areas that are closer to Republic of Armenia. The kurdish issue ,in view, they will also be -eventually-granted some sort of autonomy in areas mainly populated by them in Eastern Turkey.Kurds number close to 15-16 million on those lands that was for millenia both armenian and kurdish populated.Peace can only be worked out in acompromise manner.Otherwise each side demanding their wishes to be realized, regretfully will not bring peace to the region.

TMAN

So according to you "the sovereign status of Karabagh should always be secondary to the lives of the human beings who live there . . . "

Only an apologist for Muslim intolerance could mouth such hypocritical drivel.

Is that the kind of consideration that Muslim Turks extended to the lives of the Armenian Christians who inhabited eastern Turkey for over 2,500 years? No, once under Turkish rule, Armenian Christians were reduced to second class citizens and suppressed. When the Armenians protested these conditions, the Turkish reponse was a series of massacres starting in the 1890s and culiminating with the annihilation of the Armenian presence in eastern Turkey in 1915. Why don't you just search "Armenian massacres" on Google for further reading.

The Karabagh Armenians just got fed up with being marginalized under Azeri rule. When they protested, as they had every right to do, the Azeri response was the same as the Turkish response in 1915, attempted deportation, along with murders in Sumgait where they hunted down and killed Armenians like game. Except this time, the Armenians, mindful of what happened in 1915, fought back and won.

Do not talk about consideration of lives, when no such consideration has been shown to the Armenians in their own historical homeland.

Mike you are deluded if you only see things as black and white as you describe them. These kids are making the most of the scant opportunities this region has to offer to its people. It is a shame that the war has restricted the potential the communities in Karabagh have to develop. To whom this land 'belongs' to is insignificant to the people that call it their home, even if some of them swear fealty to any separatist political ideology that stems from intense nationalism. In reality what matters is that the displaced Azeris and Armenians are allowed to return to their homes. The sovereign status of Karabagh should always be secondary to the livelihoods of the human beings who lived there and some of whom have had the privilege to continue to do so.

These kids grew up in a democratic society that made its mind to be free and independent. Their parents and grandparents fought a brutal war waged against civilians by the government of Azerbaijan. They won that war and built a sound democracy. Now Western democracies do everything to help Azerbaijan to add this independent country to an their oil rich "sultanate" where current president inherited his presidency from his father, people are questioned by police for voting for singers in a music contest because they were Armenians... By supporting Azerbaijan's "territorial integrity" its oil hungry friends actually support Stalin's decision to take Armenian populated region and give it to then newly created Soviet Azerbaijan.
