VLADIVOSTOK -- More than 200 university students and teachers held a demonstration in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok to protest nuclear tests in nearby North Korea, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Demonstrator Zakhar Skorokhodov told RFE/RL that the protest's slogan is "Peace in the Sea of Japan!" He said if a nuclear disaster took place in North Korea -- which is only 150 kilometers from Vladivostok -- Russia's Primorsky Krai region would suffer.
Another demonstrator, Olga Avdeeva, says it is unlikely the North Korean leadership will pay attention to the protest, but "if small kids are playing with fire and natural gas next door, we cannot silently wait until the whole apartment block is blown up."
Demonstrators signed a resolution urging Pyongyang to end its nuclear tests and sent it to the North Korean Consulate in Nakhodka.
North Korea conducted its last nuclear test on May 25 and fired short-range missiles off its eastern coast the next day.
Primorsky Krai officials instructed its four weather stations to measure the radiation level in the region every three hours.
