TBILISI -- A youth activist in Georgia was severely beaten in Tbilisi during opposition protests, RFE/RL's correspondent in the Georgian capital reports.

Irakliy Khukhuneishvili, an activist of the Why? radical youth organization, was hospitalized in a serious condition after unknown assailants beat him with rubber truncheons.

Dozens of activists stayed overnight outside the parliament building after opposition forces held mass protests in Tbilisi on April 9.

Protestors demanded that President Mikheil Saakashvili resign by 1600 local time on Friday, April 10.

The leader of opposition Democratic Movement - United Georgia party, Nino Burjanadze, stated that the authorities' proposal to hold a dialogue with the opposition came too late.
