The attack took place in Kandahar's Maiwand district.

Javed Faisal, a spokesman for Kandahar's provincial government, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan the athletes were members of a local soccer team.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
