By RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal

A former governor of an Afghan province has been freed in Pakistan two weeks after he was abducted by gunmen.

The release of Fazlullah Wahidi, the former governor of Herat Province, was confirmed by an Afghan diplomat in Peshawar to RFE/RL on February 26.

The diplomat, Azam Nuristani, said Wahidi was turned over to Afghan officials in Peshawar late on February 25. Wahidi was in good health, Nuristani said, and would be reunited with his family soon.

Wahidi was reported missing in Islamabad on February 12. Many details surrounding his disappearance still remain unclear.

Nuristani said Wahidi had no idea who his abductors were or what possible motive they may have had.
