Afghan Presidential Candidate Abdullah Gains Endorsement

Former Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rasul has endorsed another former foreign minister, Abdullah Abdullah.
The front-runner in the Afghan presidential election, Abdullah Abdullah, has been endorsed by defeated candidate Zalmai Rasul.

Rasul, a close ally of current President Hamid Karzai, finished third in the first round of the presidential election, held on April 5.

Rasul's spokesman, Jawid Faisal, made the announcement of Rasul's endorsement of Abdullah at a press conference on May 11 in Kabul.

Abdullah finished first in the election with 44.9 percent of the vote, beating Ashraf Ghani, who received 31.5 percent.

Rasul finished third with 11.5 percent of the vote.

The runoff election between Abdullah and Ghani will be held on June 7.
