Afghan Lawmaker's Machine-Gun Heroics Make Him A Facebook Sensation

Afghan lawmaker Haji Naeem Lalay has become something of a social-media sensation after a video was posted on YouTube showing him aggressively defending Kabul's parliament building during the April 15 attack by insurgents.

In the video, Lalay, who hails from Kandahar, is seen crouched down behind sandbags on the roof of parliament, dressed in his shalwar kameez, firing a machine gun at unseen atttackers. Sporadic gunfire can be heard in the distance.

After a few bursts, the machine gun is helpfully reloaded by a half-dozen or so security personnel also hunkered down on the roof. They appear unfazed by Lalay taking matters into his own hands and are not seen firing at all during the clip.

At one point, Lalay is warned that three families live in the building at which he is firing.

At the end of the video, Lalay even calmly sips from a cup of tea.

Hat tip to RFE/RL's Bashir Ahmad Gwakh for first posting the video on his blog "Aghan Corner."
